Though I have to admit, if A/B/O weirdos went with sponge louse polymorphism, the fandom would be EVEN MORE WORSER than it already is, with macho alphas, female-presenting betas, and gammas instead of omegas who, uh look, it would be worser

I'm also slightly bitter because I've been writing aliens since COLLEGE that were based loosely on the alpha/beta (NOT gamma) aspects of sponge lice and I tried to build up a society around them and now the terms are associated with horny fans, awful incels, and/or bad science

(I'm not saying horny fans are necessarily bad per se, but I'm one of those obnoxious asexual twerps who really DOES think naked-people art is about aesthetics and weird alien life cycles are interesting from a WORLDBUILDING perspective and that tends to get eclipsed)

This reminds me of a nature film I saw where two Hercules beetles were battling over a female and during the fight a runt snuck up & mated under their noses.

Exactly!

oh, that reminds me of Humon's Animal Lives comics, where they expand on different types of "couples" http://humoncomics.com/archive/animal-lives … . The cuttlefish sounds like what you're talking about.
-
Yeah, cuttlefish do that, too!
