    Putin has two clear strategic objections: 1)To reestablish Russian hegemony (or even sovereignty) in the space of the former Soviet Union, 2) Weakening NATO. Putin sees this as a binary choice - a weaker NATO is a stronger Russia.

    "Off ramps” for Putin or anything else that undercuts increasing pressure on Moscow is exactly the wrong approach. It ignores the real point of Putin’s aggression: to weaken NATO and reestablish Moscow’s hegemony over the former Soviet Union.
