  1. 5/5: International threats are back with a vengeance. The critical unanswered question is whether the US can avoid complacency about potential aggressors. Biden's speech was silent on China. America's defense challenges require a global approach and a massive new commitment.

  2. 4/5: STEP 3 - Congress should insist that any Biden Administration nuclear deals with Iran or North Korea be submitted to the Senate for ratification as treaties.

  3. 3/5: STEP 2 - We need to restore our energy independence and be the world’s leader in liquified natural gas exports. Energy security is national security for both the US and our allies.

  4. 2/5: STEP 1 - Congress must pass a $100B emergency defense supplemental to rebuild our defenses against Russia and China. Years of counter-insurgency warfare have weakened our deterrence against near-peer adversaries.

  5. 1/5: Last night was a reminder that while America remains strong, our leadership is weak. We resolved to stand against Putin's aggression and challenges from authoritarian regimes but failed to hear immediate concrete steps. Here are three proposals that require urgent action.

The West has failed to deter Russia’s attack, and its sanctions have so far been pinpricks. One new idea is for NATO and EU countries to bar entry to any Russian citizens. Such a visa ban is clear, sweeping, immediate and readily enforceable. More here:

Putin's announcement that he had ordered Moscow’s nuclear deterrent forces to high alert produced all the publicity he must have expected, at home and abroad -- but overreacting or underreacting would give Putin more than he deserves. Full analysis here:

SOLUTION: The Biden Admin has pursued a strategy of “graduated escalation” in imposing sanctions against Russia. It’s time to squeeze the Kremlin hard, not engage in semiotic warfare & gradual escalation. Drive a stake through Russia’s energy sector. Now.

PROBLEM: "Kremlin-controlled energy giant Gazprom has said that Russian gas exports via Ukraine to Europe continued normally. Requests for gas via the route stand at 107.5 million cubic metres as of Sunday." This is unacceptable.

Biden claims the West is united. Really? Watch the EU today. Will Europe adopt harsh sanctions against Russia, or primarily protect its own interests.

I joined to discuss the unfolding crisis in Ukraine. Biden's admission that they're engaged in a gradual escalation of sanctions is a further admission of a disastrous failure of policy. Watch the full interview here:

Can sanctions deter Putin? : "I don't think we have effective sanctions in place for what he's done in eastern Ukraine. I think the NS2 decision by Germany is vastly over hyped. They're already EU suspensions in effect and German suspensions in effect."

Excellent but there is more. Russia, as some Putin advisers theorize, wants to resume hegemony even further west, like the USSR and the first Tsarist empire, and that is why the Polish government is so worried

Putin has a wide range of options in Ukraine. He's trying to see if he can split NATO and how much he can get for the lowest cost. The real mistake is believing Putin's only option is an all-out invasion. He may have other objectives in mind.
