I'm constantly saying this. My book is YA and they are messy. Messy, a little stupid, reckless. I have to defend my book all the time to people because it's a YA book that deals with *gasp* sex and betrayal.

It's so ridiculous when people overreact to YA because, gasp, teens are acting like TEENS?? It boils my blood.

I'm with some magazines this year and they all use content warnings, which I like. I've read several books where I personally would have liked a warning about things like detailed sex scenes and sexual assault in advance (wouldn't necessarily stop me from reading, but it helps!)

People have a tendency to treat fiction like it's prescriptive, like an author is trying to tell people how the world should be, like if you put something into words, that's an expression of your vision for real life and simultaneously an attempt to meet your own sinister agenda.
