You really have to stifle that urge to be nice, of course, but if you develop a reputation for calmly and politely shaming people who try to shame you, I promise, they will stop doing it.

There is no reason to be overly nice, but no need to be rude. Firm and fair. I decided to not to have kids, and frankly its nobody's business but my own. If we live our lives by how others perceive us, it's not much of a life.

Go ahead and be rude. Rudeness never killed anybody. Rude has its time and place like everything else. Embrace the fucking rude.

For me, if it's someone that I actually like (and there aren't many), I'll be nice...at first. But if it's someone I don't know, then they discover quickly that they made a terrible judgment call to try to force their beliefs. So I agree. Sometimes rudeness needs to be embraced

All this article does is strengthen my desire for not having kids. I will feed myself on their moral outrage!

I have dear friends who would make great parents, and they're not interested in it. Breaks my heart, but that's MY issue. Not theirs. I don't bother them with it. I maintain a true respect for their choice.

I have been know to sometimes go, "Well, I might have wanted kids, but then I met yours." *whistles innocently*

It's perverse that a decision to not procreate could spur moral outrage, given that everyone knows the world is despoiled due to overpopulation. I suspect what really drives it is a guilty conscience. IMO moral inversion and projection explain most conservative speech these days.

Agreed, but even short of that it’s crazy that “I don’t want to have my own children” is not enough all by itself.

Great answer if your objective is encouraging large majorities of people to angrily reject environmentalism. Oy.

What's interesting is that the study group was 197 undergrad students - which means that many of them probably haven't had children themselves. I wonder what the results would be on an older cohort of adults.

I've always turned it into a joke: "if you know someone crazy enough to hook up with me, but sane enough to be trusted with kids, let me know." Eventually even Momma stopped asking...

Well they do have an inflationary effect on inner city housing and public schools.
