A friend's toddler's new 'do has dredged up some very strong childhood feelings for those of us whose parents wouldn't/couldn't give us "French" braids.

I just figured it out a couple months ago and could not be more proud of myself after ~30 years of trying and failing including on dreaded barbie dolls. I'm not sure what happened - it just somehow clicked in my brain. So weird.
Your hair is nice and thick, mine just slides out. Plus, stylist error (aka me).
