A mini thread on the whole “progressives cost Democrats!” argument: Progressives had an economic message. Moderates did not. It was the most imp issue for a plurality of voters - 35%, then 82% of them backed Trump. (1/?)
Progressives *should* have a progressive economic message, I mean duh, that’s how it works. They not only won their liberal districts, they turned out progressives for an up ballot ticket they frankly weren’t excited about. Moderates barely won their districts or lost. (2/?)
Moderates didn’t have an economic msg from leaders & top of ticket. In a vacuum, message that’s out there - progressive one - will come to the fore. If moderate voters rejected moderate candidates based on the progressive economic msg, its bc moderates didn’t have one. (3/?)
Democratic leaders incorrectly believed they could run solely on Trump backlash & healthcare. Then, they didn’t even really talk about it much. Just 11% of voters picked healthcare as top issue this year. It was a miscalculation. (4/?)
We’ll know more about which voters showed up this year in time but every exit poll indicates that progressives managed to turn their people out - they actually organized! - while Democrats overall/Biden will get roughly same % of White working-class support as in 2016. (5/?)
Progressives got their people energized IN SPITE OF up ballot races often not appealing to their ppl & it helped up ballot; moderates definitively did not, and now somehow want to blame progressives. How do nat’l democrats keep forgetting IT IS ALWAYS ABOUT THE ECONOMY? (6/6)
