Having covered everything from a 12-member city council in rural area to a big urban county to state government and national politics, I have to say it's the most fun. Also our national coverage would be way better if more reporters had done it!
I may be a national political reporter but damn do I love local politics at the micro/county/precinct level. That's where it's at imo.

Try sitting through a three hour planning board hearing where every NIMBY in town gets 5 minutes to talk about how a housing development will bring the “wrong people” into the neighborhood, because 15% of the units are “affordable,” AKA slightly below market value.
