it is very normal in cities. What they don't tell you and it's complicated and not at all accessible to most people is that you can just submit an out-of-network claim and insurance usually reimburses a good portion of it. This does not negate your very real points here!
I know I am capable of navigating this but someone in a serious mental health crisis? I have trouble taking you seriously as a mental healthcare provider if you think someone in crisis can deal with the burden of out-of-network paperwork hoping and praying to get reimbursed.
oh for sure, it's been impossible at times even for me and I have the time and patience to sit on the phone and yell at insurance companies. However, like you, I got there because no-one in network was taking new patients. Mental healthcare is totally broken (New York is worse!)
and the people I have seen and liked normally have sliding scale policies and help those in need navigate it. It is still a total nightmare.
