A thread/rant/query on mental healthcare in DMV area: Several years ago, I talked with PCP about finding a therapist. She looked into who took my insurance (like 3) and none were taking new patients. She said it was very common for mental healthcare providers (MHP) here. (1/?)

And, apologies for a 7/6, but how did mental healthcare become only specialty in which it is acceptable for providers to not take insurance? My allergist takes it, dermatologist does, PT too. But you need to be rich & have bandwidth for paperwork to access mental health care.

it is very normal in cities. What they don't tell you and it's complicated and not at all accessible to most people is that you can just submit an out-of-network claim and insurance usually reimburses a good portion of it. This does not negate your very real points here!

I have a therapist now who I love and don't think she's in it for the money but I pay her at the end of the month and then wait (sometimes a long time) for the reimbursement.

I can't speak to in-person services but Cigna offers video therapy and there's lots of options for only $25/session, which is very much appreciated
