A thread/rant/query on mental healthcare in DMV area: Several years ago, I talked with PCP about finding a therapist. She looked into who took my insurance (like 3) and none were taking new patients. She said it was very common for mental healthcare providers (MHP) here. (1/?)

This made me LIVID. Why would I want to see a MHP who is, by action and deed, clearly only interested in money? And therefore only providing care to wealthy and/or upper middle class people? I know it is a business but they take an oath. (3/?)

Needless to say, I refused to see any MHP who I felt did not have empathy and a desire to help as one of their core missions. So I never saw one. Several years have passed, we are in a pandemic and people are suffering, and it is NO BETTER. (4/?)

Is this normal in all cities? Or is it MHP in DC who aren't in it to actually ... help people? I know several people looking now & they are: 1) not called back at all 2) called back but when they say they want to use insurance, surprise! not taking new patients. (5/?)

The entire thing has given me a really bad view of MHP professionals, tbh, who are ignoring people who may need really need help. Has *anyone* in the DMV had a more positive experience accessing care? (6/6)

And, apologies for a 7/6, but how did mental healthcare become only specialty in which it is acceptable for providers to not take insurance? My allergist takes it, dermatologist does, PT too. But you need to be rich & have bandwidth for paperwork to access mental health care.

When I visited a therapist in March, he insisted on full payment up front. He did take a credit card, but not insurance.

I am really worried for people who are having severe mental health crises! This is not acceptable.
