As many of ya'll know a main hobby of mine is scouting rural farmhouses & cabins within 3 hours of the DMV & while I've always been open to the "needs some work" category some of my picks are getting downright "condemned haunted house" caliber.

Oh! Try Oakland, Maryland! We’re driving back from the hubby’s cabin by Herrington Manor State Park. Very peaceful, and the bookstore is open again now.
I forgot about your cabin! I'm looking everywhere. The cheaper the better. Some of the houses are more like tents. And also just looking at cheap land with no structure.

There’s a house that looks abandoned just down the road from us. I think I saw “for sale” signs on homes by Swallow Falls State Park. It’s Garrett County, which is gigantic. Pricey by Deep Creek and cheaper otherwise.
