It’s easy. When a car wins, it’s because it had a “good set-up.” If a car loses, it’s because it had a “bad set-up.” This is true even if that car spins out of the track entirely and goes over a cliff while the driver hurls empty vodka bottles out the window. Bad set-up.

There is no ball involved and seem to be few rules except drive fast so I feel like I can get up to "speed" quickly?

An annoying slightly drunk woman once explained NASCAR to me in a DC bar while I was trying to watch an important ball game. She said it's all about the drivers. They cultivate loyal fans who follow them around like Deadheads. The drivers really care about their fans, she said.
