I don’t get the “cancel rent” movement. The people pushing it seem like the ones who are able to pay. Why should I not pay rent if I’m able? My mgmt company has shown every indication they will work with you if you cannot. Shows a real lack of grasp about trickle down effects.
Then it’s a totally different situation. My building actually advertised that they are barred from evictions and fines during stay at home order & said they’d work with folks. The person leading the cancel rent effort is fully employed at a gov agency.

My aunt’s landlord tried to evict her in the middle of the pandemic despite laws in California saying she can’t do that. My aunt was afraid & paid so now my family in California is almost starving. Someone has to lead the movement even if it’s not their situation there’s empathy.

I don’t think refusing to pay rent when you’re able fixes anything and certainly not a broken housing system. If anything makes landlords less likely to negotiate with those in true need. And could lead to building staff being furloughed etc.
