Not a major candidate, no. Reagan’s ambush of Poppy Bush in NH in 1980 was a tough beat, but it was an ambush. Bloomberg had to know what was coming. Jesus, he’s paying people 350 large to run his campaign, and they didn’t have him ready for the most obvious attacks.
I cannot - in my admittedly medium-length political reporting career - remember a presidential candidate face planting that badly at a debate. Send me other examples! Cc @CharlesPPierce
