    In the end this is terrible news for those hoping for collapse and the opportunity to rebuild something better (eg "how do we get to patchwork" NRx theories). If France is flourishing, imagine how much worse things can get in the US before leviathan topples over.

    Of course there is _some_ effect (this paper argues an extra 10 percentage points in govt spending/gdp -> 0.5-1 percentage point growth decrease ), which over time is really bad, but certainly not catastrophic.

    It's interesting to go back and read stuff from the 20s-40s when the welfare/regulatory state was getting started. Many thought capitalism was a fragile mechanism that would quickly collapse under the weight of govt, but look at how much shit you can throw at it...
