This kind of plan should make one more bearish, not more bullish, on the state of tech in Europe. Shows that policy makers have no idea how innovation works and are still stuck making 5-year plans.

The flaw in your reasoning is that China went through steps 1 to 3, and look where it is now.
-
Things are easier when you start with step 0: outlaw foreign competition ;) (Also unsure China went through step 1 — its government is one of the friendliest towards new tech, and you can’t say it hates capital either)

The other mistake governments always make when they do this sort of thing is to fight the last war. The time to start AWS was in 2006, when AWS launched.

It's exactly that. America & China builds the future, the European Union can only regulate the future that other's created - RT

What are the building blocks of the future: quantum mechanics, computation, the web, neural networks. Each of them were created in Europe. Europe’s problems isn’t a lack of brainpower. Neither is America the alpha & omega creativity .

Do you believe GDPR and other privacy related policies would eventually spark in the US? I think Europe sometimes poses a reasonable response to the more libertarian unchecked tech monopolies. focus on sometimes.
-
the EU is very friendly to its members as consumers, as long as the product that they are consuming is already established. policies like that can definetly spark in the US but will also impact innovation, just hard to say by how much.

The story is always more complicated than "EU bad" but I guess that's what get the clicks. BTW let me know when the US stops using cheques.

I'd attribute the lack of an European Google one of financing failure (and some ludditism, no doubt)
