This kind of plan should make one more bearish, not more bullish, on the state of tech in Europe. Shows that policy makers have no idea how innovation works and are still stuck making 5-year plans.

step 1: kill all innovation with decades of anticapitalist, antitech policies step 2: be sad that the US dominates tech step 3: finance massive top down plans to build a "European cloud" step 4: watch it fail embarrassingly (see the "European Google")

99 smartphones are transported in a handcart to generate virtual traffic jam in Google Maps. Through this activity, it is possible to turn a green street red which has an impact in the physical world by navigating cars on another route!

How should we call “Gell-Mann amnesia, but for public services?” I.e. no entity provides you services that are anywhere as bad as the government — but I’m sure it’ll do great at X! “DMV-TSA amnesia?”

Anyway, all immigrants personally know at least one person with such a horror story. I can think of three off the top my head — and that’s just the ones I’m close to.

On online forums, she’s met folks who went through the same ordeal, and got stuck for up to 26 months(!). She’s asked me to help her move her stuff out of her apartment in SF, in the event that she’s still stuck 2 months from now. Imagine how she must feel.

So they took her passport to correct the mistake, telling her it should take “a few days.” It’s been 5 weeks, during which she’s been stuck in France, 5000 miles away from home (been living in the US for 10+ years). Obviously hasn’t been able to get a single update from them

Just as they were about to put that stamp, they noticed that her old student visa had a mistake — its date was off by one day. Not that it should matter — she hadn’t been on that visa for 7+ yrs and got a few other ones since then. But the bureaucracy wanted its correct date

(Also, why does this step even exist? And why do you have to fly to another country to get it, spending days and thousands of $, instead of it being an online form that takes 5min to fill up? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )

I have a close friend who recently had to take a flight to Paris to get a stamp on her passport, which is the last step to get a visa that already got approved.

One comparison that could help them understand: you know the kind of experience you get at the DMV? Getting a visa is 10x more kafkaesque and frustrating, and takes several months (to be repeated every few years, for 5-15 years until you get a green card)

Recently had a debate that went in the exact reverse direction: me showing some data, my interlocutor making some dismissive comments regarding the general uselessness of “statistics,” and suggesting a documentary instead
