I first read about fumi-e in the wonderfully grim novel Silence by the Japanese author Shusaku Endo, who provides a Japanese Catholic’s perspective on European missionaries during the period.

This (Or 13118) was a morbid find. It’s a yafta, or proclamation placed above the corpse of Ismail, who was executed in August 1829 for sedition against the Sublime Porte. Ismail had earlier been banished from because he was a Janissary.

The general scheme seems to be a folio of text, followed by a folio of katia, followed by another folio of text, followed by a marbled sheet, such as this one. It’s a beautifully laid-out that is a true feast for the eye and the mind.

What’s really special about this work is the katia or cut paper (think / ). It is a rare example of this within the collections, and is used for some stunning and geometric designs, occasionally in leaf.
