No one honestly doubts this is true, do they?https://twitter.com/ColumbiaBugle/status/1060392498508353536 …

Dunno.. every white urban/suburban person I’ve ever met in Cali was basically hard left. Don’t discount the contribution of hippies, Hollywood, Wine Country, and Silicon Valley
-
So what shifted it from Reagan-world to the Left Coast (within recent history)?
-
Multifactorial, I think. Strong Left-leaning power structures, Asian/Hispanic Immigration, Asians becoming a Dem voting bloc, and so on.
-
In California, you have powerful environmentalist NIMBYs, cosmopolitan Whites, and minorities, and together the coalition makes the Left very strong. The main faultline is something that doesn’t get much press: zoning restrictions.
-
Without these things, the California cities would probably have become Asia-style megalopolises. Zoning restrictions are something that powerful California Whites like, and everyone else hates.
-
I don't think this is right. Asians choose to live in some of the most hyper-zoned, hyper planned cities in SoCal, e.g. Irvine, where they recently banded together to kick out all the homeless people tarnishing their suburban lawns.http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-homeless-asians-20180401-story.html …
-
Right, but they choose that in spite of the zoning laws, not because of them. At least the ones who came here after the 1990s/early 2000s.
-
Anecdotal, I know, but I worked for several years teaching their kids SAT prep, and I saw no indication that any of these East Asians want to live in a densely packed metropolis. They all drive huge SUVs. Bay Area might be diff dynamics, but SoCal Asians have NIMBY tendencies too
