Proggies are the party of permanent revolution. E.g. they are always forcing words to change their ordinary meaning. But this is relatively okay as long as conservatives don't show up; there's no opponent and no fight.

This is done exactly by the fact proggies are always revolutionary. If one conservative does stick their neck out, they will suddenly be a lightning rod for every proggie's pent-up violence.

This works okay as an incentive structure as long as proggies are relatively tolerant of submissive conservatives. They have to throw the outer party a bone from time to time. The problem is that, lately, this has become impossible for them.

Cthulu's continuous march leftward...the holiness spiral can be moderated, but never stopped, short of abolishing leftism entire. Even vaguely functional (fascist) sanity has become intolerably far right of the ruling leftists.

Simultaneously, the internet's shattering of the broadcast stranglehold has made proggies feel insecure, and they've responded the same way theocracy has always responded: by doubling down on the iron fist and tyranny.

It turns out all those proggies who were in favour of free speech and open societies were Straussians trying to stop the rabid fanatics from destroying a critical support of permanent revolution.
