The most tiresome and easily debunked Progressive idea of Medieval Man is that he for some inexplicable reason was dirty. Let's hear what the great Johannes Janssen (1829-1891) has to say. (quoting a 1509 text on daily life in Germany)pic.twitter.com/U050kBmGqk

So bathing during the middle ages was by no means an odd gesture taken up by the idle rich, on the contrary it was a Christian ideal, a common practice for all city dwellers, from the richest, to the masters, to the working men and apprentices...pic.twitter.com/jXo564J5no

...to the very poorest of the poor. Cleanliness, and the access to the public bathhouses fell under the virtues of Christian charity, and funding was more than adequate. Then as now, it was customary for the school children to go on weekdays, when there were fewer bathers.pic.twitter.com/UtTkrQEiGQ

Many of the larger private residences (where scores of people, family members, staff, servants and employees lived together) had their own private bath houses as well, and a good supply of towels was seen as indispensable for even poorer workers.pic.twitter.com/80A7CKp1P3

Some medieval bath houses were not unlike modern ones: there was music, games, food and drink. Dürer made this woodcut of an outdoor bath in Nuremburg 1496 (he is in it as well, the man leaning on the left).pic.twitter.com/SOoUXeqfj6

(For the hard of understanding I think I need to add that it is possible to keep clean without taking baths: water and washing cloths have been around for a long time——our ancestors were as clean as we are, just more thriftily so)

Cleaner, I think, as modern advertising has spread the use of cleaning products with nasty side-effects. That, and vitamin D intake seems to directly affect body odour.

Their greater sun exposure cancelled out some of the odor?

Body odour is caused by foreign bacteria. Better D => better immune system => fewer foreigne bacteria => not as stinky.

By the way, the recommended daily for D was about 1400 last I checked. You can get something on the order of 20,000 from your skin.

Can't beat free vitamin D. I supplement if I know I won't be outside much.
