Is the modern definition of ‘refugee’ just: someone who doesn’t live in the US? The thing ‘refugees’ are seeking ‘refuge’ from is Not Living In The US, correct? Ditto for ‘asylum’: if you don’t live in the US, you can seek ‘asylum’ from..that condition just going by usage here

the Refugee Act of 1980 has a clear legal definition, the exact wording is a person "who is persecuted or who has a well-founded fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion" - they DO NOT QUALIFY

It turns out, even that definition isn't good. In fact the internal goings-on of a sovereign country is of no concern to any other country.
