The idea that a word can have both a scientific and a colloquial meaning seems to really be outside some people's grasp.

Even taking the colloquial sense here, there are some broader issues: E.g. are many artificial preservatives potentially harmful to our health? Yes. But sugar, salt, and alcohol are all *natural* preservatives that can cause health problems.

There is a big overall lack of understanding here. I've seen arguments like "No amount of toxin in our food is safe! You can't say X is safe just because it's at low concentration." Except that's exactly how toxicology works. The dose makes the poison.
