Hill 382 the second highest point on the island, a small hill called the Turkey Knob which had a large concrete pillbox at its base, and the Amphitheater, a rocky bowl that was a bloody kill zone for the Marines.

The Meatgrinder area was a vital communication system for the Japanese and they defended it to the death. The 20000 Japanese were not on Iwo Jima, they were in it! With massive tunnels, caves and large concrete block houses and pillboxes.

Each day the 4th Division during the Meatgrinder days began with a USMC artillery and naval gunfire bombardment. Then the Marines would began their infantry assault after it stopped. Some days the progress would be measured in yards!
