Suffrage is not my bailiwick, so I'd invite historians to post pieces on its history (including its fraught racial politics). But since it was requested, I did write this once on sexual violence against suffragists and OWS activists: http://www.newcriticals.com/breasts-suffragists-suffering-and-cecily-mcmillan/print …

Also, to add to the conversation: yes, UK and US suffrage (which learned from each other, though UK was where a lot of the really radical actions happened) had a lot of problems with racism, despite the erased contributions of WOC suffragists....

Among other things, the way that U.S. white women suffragists argued that granting the vote to Black men (which was severely curtailed by Jim Crow) was race betrayal to white women.

So many think "I got mine, so I'm set." Well, they're about to lose theirs because they didn't fight for everybody else.
-
Perhaps they'll learn at some point that fighting for our collective liberation is what helps the whole get and stay free. Failure to do so only gives space for oppression to function.
-
Unfortunately, you just can't reason with some people. They would rather fuck over everyone else, than to see whatever group they don't like benefit.

The WASP ladies voted for Trump.

#suffragettes learned jiu-jitsu to protect themselves & their leaders like#Pankhurst from injury & death. The reaction to the movement from the police & men in general was violent. Their techniques became known as#suffragitsu:https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-34425615 … -
They also carried toffee hammers to break windows — small enough to conceal, a kitchen tool so not unusual for a woman to have one those who were arrested received little hammer pins with “votes for women” on them That’s not even getting into the jewerly for hunger strikers.

Then most of them quit before anyone of colour got to vote.

Truth, which gives us the opportunity to do better. Just because they didn’t, doesn’t mean we can’t.

Trans & queer folks threw bricks at the cops to fight for their rights. Leftists *today* balk at a show of force like that. No more sanitizing the historical fight for civil rights.

Obviously not a documentary so there’s some fictionalized narrative, but I’ve always loved the movie Iron Jawed Angels, about Alice Paul and suffrage.
-
I remember waiting for this to come out on HBO. I was so excited to watch it!
-
#Timeless had an episode with Alice Paul and the suffragists - a small slice of the movement but extremely inspiring and parallels what women are stil having to fight and fight for today
