My latest: Jeffrey Choate was trained in prison to fight fires, but now that he’s been released, he’s not allowed to become a firefighter because of his criminal record. Even as wildfires rage in his home state. It’s a ridiculous Catch-22 that must end.https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/heatherknight/article/As-wildfires-rage-California-needs-more-15523376.php …

Readers may remember Jeffrey Choate from a column last year tracing his sad journey from a Tenderloin sidewalk to a San Quentin prison cell. Today’s column continues to follow Jeffrey’s story through a Fort Bragg fire camp and home to his mom.https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/heatherknight/article/Hard-journey-happy-kid-to-homeless-SF-drug-13877402.php …

This column recounts the first time I met Jeffrey Choate. He was passed out on a Larkin Street sidewalk with needles strewn around him. He was on the losing end of San Francisco’s refusal to do anything about its dangerous open-air drug market.https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/heatherknight/article/safe-sights-drug-dealers-tenderloin-sf-use-soma-13286197.php …

Chesa's approach is based on hope and illusion, not on the bitter facts -- he is responsible for the deaths under his watch, sprung from his feeble approach. Addicts need tough love, drug dealers need tough sentencing and deportation.
