I forgot that this movie in-universe just has Philip Glass hanging out in the studio to improvise emotional soundtracks as things happen.

Yeah, it's absurd how many people declare themselves fit to administer impromptu exposure therapy to people they barely know because the alternative would be to show consideration and they'd rather not.

Not forced (obviously has to be voluntary) but one of the most well-established treatment for phobias is systematic desensitization, which does involve exposing people to triggering situations, just gradually and with the use of relaxation techniques

So you 100% completely agree with the OP’s comment: “you can't ‘treat’ a phobia by FORCING (emphasis mine) someone into triggering situations.” Good.

The Truman Show is a very good movie. When his fake best friend has this incredibly earnest moment and says “look, Truman, if all of this wasn’t real? I wouldn’t be real, too, right?” I totally bought it the first time. Man, that movie did a number on me by the end.

Ugh. I just watched a bunch of clips and goddamn this movie is SO GOOD. But so unsettling.

When I was a kid my dad made me watch several documentaries about spiders to "cure" my arachnophobia. He made my phobia substantially worse. I will literally freeze up and cry now.

-
I'm really sorry, that's horrible.
