"Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry" is "Hogwarts School of Magic (by Ladies) and the Exact Same Magic (by Gentlemen)."

The idea that "witch" and "wizard" are gendered terms aren't something she invented or codified in fantasy or popular conception, but she just built it into the world-building at such a fundamental level.

There's Witch Weekly, which is very clearly the magical version of a woman's magazine (articles about fashion, housekeeping, rating the best smiles of handsome wizards, etc.)

I mean, you definitely could, but she definitely doesn't. She genders things relentlessly and it never pays off, goes anywhere, or means anything.https://twitter.com/IronJoeBro/status/1366793230650589185 …

Used to be when I would rant about this I'd get people replying to tell me where they thought the division between witchcraft and wizardry was because surely if it's a school of witchcraft AND wizardry then those must be two different things, right?

But in the whole of the series, nothing ever implies that witchcraft means this thing and wizardry means this other thing, and the whole gender system where "witch" means "female magical human" and "wizard" means "male magical human" cuts against that idea.

As I said: she didn't create this idea. I think like so many other things that showed up in the early books she just didn't think that much about it before incorporating it into her world. "OF COURSE wizards are male and witches are female, everyone knows that."

And having decided to gender it, she then has to make sure her co-ed school isn't called a wizard school because that would be sexist, so we get Hogwarts School for Lady-Magic and Dude-Magic, where Lady-Magic and Dude-Magic are the same magic, but we have to know who's doing it.

Also, nothing says "trans-inclusive" like enforcing the gender binary (maybe they cover that in the article, but I am not reading bloomberg lol).
