Basically it seems like the construction of the castle went very badly wrong, or it became wrong over the years, and so it's a school made out of missing stairs. You can read this as a commentary on the infamously brutal British schools for upperclass children, I suppose.

Year one contains an off-hand mention about a certain floor being off-limits because you might could die. And the same thing about the Forbidden Forest. Dumbledore protests the dementors but his advice for their presence is basically "try not to get your soul sucked out, losers".

There are some mentions throughout the series about how, prior to Voldemort assuming control of the government, school attendance is optional and some people just learn magic from their parents.

Kind of feels like the person who got magical education from family and private tutors and went to a Muggle school would be way better adjusted and prepared to live in the world than anyone who went to Hogwarts.

They have astonishingly good healing magic for some injuries. So kids get badly injured, healed up, and probably never get any counseling for the accompanying mental trauma.
