I have said this before, I will say it again: practice saying, in a tone of scoffing, "Dude, really?", "Seriously?", "Are you serious?" and the like. Practice so you can say it when you don't know what else to say, when you're not ready to say anything.https://twitter.com/apocalynds/status/1275440786109132800 …

Also a call to action for the would-be allies out there: "Hey dude, wtf" or "hey man, that is NOT cool" are the most powerful spells in your spellbook. People heard him say this. Nobody said shit. I had male friends DEFENDING him to me. 2020 make the bad men uncomfortable too.

It is hard to shift gears from stunned bystander to active objector, and the more seconds you let slip by without saying something, the more awkward and pointless it's going to feel. Practice the simplest, vaguest objections. Imagine in your mind, yourself just going "what".

Like rehearse it in your head and practice it out loud. I mean, don't imagine a whole scenario where you give forth reasoned discourse on how very wrong someone is and avenge people's honor because it will never go in real life the way it does in your head. Never.

But the part where you break the silence by just looking at the person who has just transgressed and go, "Seriously?"... that part is worth rehearsing. And it'll give you a few seconds to figure out what else you might say.

In fairness to men... this is something a lot of people of all genders and experiences may need to practice because the surprise and horror can be what keeps you from saying anything. https://twitter.com/thetophus/status/1275614783509630976 …

People sometimes laugh at the idea of practicing saying "what", literally "what", just flat what... but I think we all of us in our lifetime have had the horrible experience of the moment that stretches on forever while we know something must be said but can't figure out what.

The flat "what" is a great thing to break the silence and find your voice because if you find that you have more to say than you thought it can turn into a complete sentence. And if you don't, you've still broken the silence.

There have been times when I’ve been so gobsmacked by the sheer wrongness of what someone was saying that I had no comeback at all.

I've been in situations where the sheer bizarre fractal wrongness of what someone just said left me speechless. Just sitting there opening & closing my mouth like a fish.
