"For each one governs everything from his affect; those who are torn by contrary affects do not know what they want, and those who are not moved by any affect are very easily driven here and there." Spinoza

Nietzsche’s enlightenment is a continuation of it, an effort to make it harder, more skeptical, more realistic, to not only question the epistemologies and metaphysics of the priest but his values as well. Pinker’s is fundamentally a counter-enlightenment, just like Kant’s.

Has anyone considered that the more we are concerned with the preservation of languages and cultures, the less we might become with preserving the people currently speaking and living them?

If the issue is that if we decouple even momentarily at the global scale the world's economy will fall apart, then the answer is to remake the system as one that can adaptively decouple, not to continue to reinforce the tight coupling that will necessarily lead to total collapse.

I voted Remain, but not out of love for the EU in its current form. I did so in the hope that the Union might reform towards democracy, not away from it. This is despotism.

I had some fun going through Ethics again to retrace some of Deleuze's arguments in Practical Philosophy.

Chapter 2 of 'Spinoza: Practical Philosophy' is pretty much self-help for theory dorks like me. Organise your encounters!

thanks to libgen alone, in this part of history, one has more worthwhile information readily available than in any phase previous. it validates all those old romantic notions of what good the internet could do, & smashes up the information barriers around fields of study

It's not often enough that I stop to appreciate the fact that I'm basically getting paid to read and write about A Thousand Plateaus.

I think the best cure for the American Trad-Cath LARP would be to experience the ritual humiliation and beatings my parents endured in actual Catholic School in the 1970s.

We think of ascetic practice as privative, as taking away or abstaining from, but it's also additive, creating new skills and abilities in the practitioner. Here's an excerpt on Logos, Epistrophē, and Paraskeuē.

So I've been rereading Deleuze's 'Spinoza: Practical Philosophy' and rebooted the personal blog for my first written thing in a while.

"In a free commonwealth, arts and sciences will be best fostered if anyone who asks leave is allowed to teach publicly at his own expense and with his own reputation at risk." Spinoza This sounds like something the and folks would have an opinion on.

WHAT I LEARNED IN 2019 1)Modern publishing is not (ugly books); we have the capability to make books ornate. 2) Authors can derive g. satisfaction writing WHILE typesetting. Much like painters & artisans. Division of labor kills the soul

"As Foucault would say, the superman is much less than the disappearance of living men, and much more than a change of concept: it is the advent of a new form that is neither God nor man and which, it is hoped, will not prove worse than its two previous forms." Deleuze

    2) "What is the superman? It is the formal compound of the forces within man and these new forces. It is the form that results from a new relation between forces. Man tends to free life, labour and language within himself." Deleuze, FOUCAULT (1986)
