What do we know about post-secondary access in elementary school? More than you think, and NOT what you think. Always proud to work with & on national-treasure data.

They got so many air miles that they were always on the airline's flights, and they became minor celebrities among frequent flyers. Wish I could remember the name of the novel, it was reasonably creative.

passive and quiet during a hijacking, and this led to a hostage-taking which lasted over a year, in which hijackers kept flying the plane from city to city. Later, a class-action lawsuit required the airline to credit all the passengers with air miles for the entire affair /2

There was a novel around 2003 which posited a post 9/11 world in which planes kept getting blown up because hijackers would try to snatch planes for old-style hostage-taking reasons and passengers would suicide attack them. In respsonse, airlines told passengers just to stay /1

OK, apparently that's not where everyone else's mind goes when it comes to aviation near-misses.

Hey, ! If your plane's landing gear blows on take off and you have to circle for 2-3 hours before you can land, how is that treated for aeroplan purposes? I mean 3 hours has gotta be 1300-1500 miles, right? Even if it was in a circle. You credit that, right?

When talking about public transport, you should *really* use the term "Government of Canada" instead of "Ottawa" because the karma is just too awful otherwise.

This is four blocks from my office and with all the horrifically badly-managed construction projects in the neighbourhood, this describes my mood every damn day.

$140K is still a pretty good average salary, mind you.

So here's something interesting: Canadian academic salaries actually seem to have fallen a bit in the last five years (after nearly two decades of solid growth). And the fall is mainly among full profs, which I suspect means the # of over-70s may finally be falling.

It might have been unclear from the article, but we published the case study on the North Carolina program (plus a Finnish example) back in 2018. Agreed, no silver bullet: but employer engagement in retraining was a key aspect in both cases. 👇

If you want to read more about NC's Biowork program, there's this paper from 2011 which is quite interesting (and also which shows shows that not everyone benefits equally from it).

The program details are in a sense irrelevant. Once you get employers to agree on standards, it's relatively trivial to design a program around them - for polytechnics & community colleges, that's their bread and butter. But getting employers to focus long enough? That's tough

Not sure what Brookfield is going to say re: this program, but people need to dial back their "magic bullet found in NC" reactions. Real innovation here is that employers got together and decided on minimum training standards for new hires via
