Twitter can't break out of the 90M U.S.-only MAU range (& let's face it how many of those are DAUs?). Problem is...
...it's far too expensive to run the infrastructure that allows for the unlimited Follow Metaphor.

what's crazy to me, Twitter Engineering boasts of 100k+ VM instances, which means they require 1 for every (mere) 3.3k users?!

some of it. Whatever it is, it's too expensive to run. Imagine they got to say 700M MAUs, compute cost would go up x2 as well.
