From 1850-1913, Norwegians were the 2nd least positively selected of all immigrants. Their wages were lower than you'd expect & they didn't economically assimilate by 2nd generation. Only Portuguese immigrants did worse. http://www.nber.org/papers/w18011 pic.twitter.com/Lo0PPLE7kQ

Norwegian immigrants did so poorly in the United States that about 70 percent of them returned & stayed in Norway. Return rates are not always a sign of failure but their low wages, despite observable characteristics, and poor 2nd generation assimilation indicate otherwise here.

I have nothing against Norwegians or Norway but this shows that the "loser immigrants" from yesterday's "shit holes" tend to turn into excellent, rich Americans after a few generations while their countries improve substantially.

In the first five years after entry, the Norwegian-Native wage gap was the greatest. After 30+ years here it improved from the last to the . . . second from the last.pic.twitter.com/Bqj7pmDz54

So, how many people today would say that the United States is worse off because we let in a bunch of *initially* underperforming immigrants from a "shit hole" called Norway? I think the answer to that is about zero.

My great grandparents immigrated from Norway during this period. I'm glad they managed to scrape a life out of the South Dakota dirt and tough it out so I could be here today.

Amen to that! I'm glad my ancestors left the "shit holes" they came from so I could be lucky enough to be an American.

And I’m glad that my ancestors were transported to Australia as convicts. Look how well that turned out!

Sometimes returning to the home country is also the goal. Go away, make money, go back home.

Yes. Norwegians who returned did better even after doing relatively poorly here. http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1177/0019793917726981 …

I chanced upon a “factoid” in a while back that has stuck with me. I have not researched it. it stated that 60% of European immigrants to the US returned to their native lands (in the 20th century). If true that would suggest the above stat re: Norwegians was the norm.

The estimates back then vary widely between 40% and 60%.

It was an item I’ve only seen once. I don’t know the source or research behind it. It stuck with me and frankly I don’t know more about it. (It surprised me which is probably why I recall it

From a historical perspective, I have to add that many PLANNED on returning to Norway. They took education, fished for a few years... And then returned.

60% of Swedish immigrants went home too. However as I have been given to understand it was bc the Scandinavian econs started booming. Same went for Italian, Greek, Turkish migrantworkers to Sweden in 1960-80spic.twitter.com/Tmqb8HXN3Y
