Once you retreat to a legal-only argument, you’re ceding every argument about right and wrong to the other side. That also makes you a boring lawyer. In the long run, they always lose.

It is rather telling that Republican responses have all been "oh he's such a joker" or "I don't think he can do that", and not "that's an attack on fundamental norms of our democracy".

Moving the election (back or forward) would set a dangerous precedent. Future presidents could move an election to a point when their approval rating was higher, especially if some bad news is about to come out.
