Unfortunately, there is a lot of business lobbying by businesses in the EU which want the sanctions against Russia to be eased or removed. They prioritise dollars over human rights.
-
Yes, that’s true (about the businesses) but it would be an overstretch to link EU sanctions and PACE membership. One is not conditioned on the other. European Council and Council of Europe are two slightly different things...
-
I’m fully aware of differences. But removing the political sanctions (by CoE) will create a platform for increasingly loud calls to ease or remove economic sanctions introduced by the EU. Sad.
-
But the EU sanctions are firmly linked to the Minsk II progress which is not yet there. So, the EU might continue to legitimately withstand the pressure despite whoever calls for what
-
Yes they are. But now I can easily see a scenario of EU sanctions on Russia falling apart as one of the EU member states breaks consensus in return for an undisclosed energy deal with Russia. The most likely candidates: Hungary, Italy, Austria.
-
Let’s see what happens but IMHO it still looks very unlikely. Some EU MS admit that they are not fully in favour of sanctions but wouldn’t go against the EU consensus. And even if this sort of a deal you describe somehow materialises, it wouldn’t be related to the PACE situation

Well that's depressing.

Very. Europeans seem to be all right with Russia invading its neighbours and not being punished for that.
-
I am in full agreement Mr. Kokcharav. I am hoping that the saying about first Europe then the U.S is not true however, there are very strong indicators with the lifting of some RF sanctions the U.S is following a similar path of kowtowing to Moscow's pressure. God help us.

@MAECgob Shame on you! You are condoning, reinforcing and supporting the invasion of Ukraine (Crimea, Donbas) by Putin! UE will pay that with blood in the future. Short-sighted.

The unfortunate citizens near Russia's borders, clearly do not want this. How can other Euro countries be so callous & short-sighted?
