It's never been a show about realism, per se, but leaning harder into fiction – there was a montage with wipes! – nearly lost me at times.
But OITNB has never been perfect – TV isn't the medium for people who like their art flawless – and it's still remarkable.

Which is all down to the characters, basically. There are like a dozen (at least) people I genuinely care about in that prison.

That's testament to the writing and performance, obv, but also the show's approach of extending empathy to everyone.
