I feel like the show has reached that point where the instinct is to rate a season not on its own merits but by comparison to the others.
But the actual meat of S5 resists that approach, as OITNB continues its 'every season a different beast' thing.

This season went a lot harder on the genre elements: horror especially, but also romance plots, subplots with an almost sitcom setup.

It's never been a show about realism, per se, but leaning harder into fiction – there was a montage with wipes! – nearly lost me at times.
