Like, it's pop, but with enough of a twist to make it interesting. Without ever sneering at being pop?

I'm just worried about how long it can keep that balance going even if it pulls it off at first, cuz it's basically impossible to sustain

The cast is what makes it work. Over the course of the season it develops that feeling of The Gang, like a great sitcom or Buffy.

The murder mystery stuff is fun, as is the Blue Velvet 'dark side of suburbia', but it's those moments:

Betty, Veronica and Jug sharing a milkshake in Pop's; Cheryl walking into a baby shower with a jet black goth pram... That's the good shit.
