Yeah, this exact practice is slowly nudging me off Twitter. A good thing I'll hear about once or twice. A crap thing, endlessly for two days.

100%. Not 'no bad news pls' or toxic positivity or whatever, but dunking feels like it's about the practise of dunking, not the ends.
As I continue to mull on this... I guess it's hard to place an exact line between 'critical' and 'cruel', and maybe the latter does have some use as a means of applying social pressure?

Yeah, this is the stuff I was thinking of too – and the key difference, as you say, is *ordinary* individuals. The value of collective voices should be, in theory, that it's a counterbalance to some existing power dynamic. A version of the old punch down/up debate, I suppose.

(I should maybe clarify that by 'crap thing' I mean 'someone dun a bad take' rather than, e.g., 'instance of power being abused'. There's clearly a value to everyone in your timeline tweeting their protest/support for a cause.)
