Anyway. Games of 2020 not made by me for a very small group of people. I've been keeping a spreadsheet (natch) of everything I played this year. Here are the new (to me) games I ranked as A-minus or better. And then we'll do a GOTY top five at the end why not.

2. DESPERADOS III Capable of pushing my brain to max and keeping it there for an hour at a time. Playing this feels like being right on the edge of a breakdown constantly and I love it.pic.twitter.com/mCY1uzEKKY

1. HALF-LIFE: ALYX Of course. No other game has defined my year like this. Partly that's stuff external to the game itself – my first cover feature, a work trip that feels unimaginable now – but Alyx would be sat at the top spot even without any of that.pic.twitter.com/0UcDyrCK9F

But mostly it's how those gunfights deliver on the childhood promise (as opposed to the disappointing reality) of Laser Quest and, more recently, of a Space Pirate Trainer demo when I first realised, oh, in VR you can shoot without looking. Cooooool.

Having initially resigned myself to 'ahh, I'll never get to play it', and then having played it, I keep finding myself tempted to drop a few hundos on a VR headset just so I can play it *again*.
