It's interesting the way this episode represents a complete shift in the way vampires are used in the show - Spike even explicitly references that they're ditching the self-seriousness, rituals, and prophecies

It's exactly the shift the show needs - vampires are way better as swaggering psychopaths instead of weird underground nerds

S2E4 - Incan Mummy Girl This one was a lot better than I remembered. The parallels drawn between the mummy - a sacrificed teenager who never got a chance at a normal life - and the chosen one land pretty well. Nice bit of monster pathos

I feel pretty bad for Xander in this one. It seems like any time he or Willow make any meaningful connection with anyone outside the group, they turn out to be a monster?

Surprisingly canonically important episode too - it introduces both Oz (who for now just turns up randomly to ogle Willow) and Jonathan (who starts off as just an all purpose loser nerd/hapless victim)

S2E5 - Reptile Boy (should have been called Frat's Entertainment) This one is incredibly dark - I'm not sure if it's supposed to be, or if it's just aged awkwardly. Basically just a whole episode about Frat boys grooming and drugging 16 year old girls

One of those weird set ups where it's actually a relief that the frat is only capturing girls because they want to sacrifice them to a demon god, rather than... you know

The irony that this situation is then used as an opportunity to strengthen Buffy's relationship with 200 year old predator Angel seems to be lost on the writers

S2E6 - Halloween (come on! Should've been Costume Drama. Try harder) Everyone turns into their Halloween costumes! A much stronger take on the sort of thing Nightmares was going for - i.e. an excuse for a bunch of random supernatural chaos

Bunch of fun role reversals here - Xander as the action hero and Buffy as the damsel in distress, etc. Though the male gaze very much rears its ugly head again with Willow's costume (what is she even supposed to be?)

This episode is like ground zero for an obsession of Buffy and Angel's – the whole 'role switching, people become their masks' thing. Dollhouse is very much a logical endpoint. (As logical as anything re: Dollhouse ever gets, anyway.(

Oh god that's a difficult question. It's completely fascinating, and if one of those 'thing you like more than anyone you know' memes comes around for TV shows mine will probably just be Dollhouse four times, but even I can't necessarily say it's *good*.
