Animal Collective in the cruise episode works pretty well, imho.
Ooh, I haven't seen that. I say all this with the disclaimers that I haven't watched a Simpsons episode outside of the ones I own on DVD for, like, five years now( (and that the majority of this was hashed out while brushing my teeth).

hot take but..... later Simpsons is not the straight ahead quality nosedive it's often presented as, it just becomes EXTREMELY inconsistent and the lows are very very low.

This seems fair, based on what I have seen - to clarify, I don't think it's impossible to make a good modern episode of Simpsons, but I do think it's impossible to recapture the feel for an extended run.
