Watched it a few weeks ago, and had a similar reaction. Very good for marathoning, but pretty unremarkable otherwise. My wife and I spent the watch trying to decide if it was really good trash TV or really bad prestige TV. We settled on good trash.
Ha! Yeah, that's it exactly. I fear I watch far too much stuff that sits in that overlap of the Venn diagram.

I did like the Pied Piper motif that came up, although it's super ridiculous and unnecessary. I feel like that sort of sideways allusory junk is a hallmark of the genre.

I totally missed this until my wife pointed it out at the end of the season, which meant it was never an 'oh god this again' and a fun realisation. But I think in general, its worst aspects were when you could feel the creators were pleased with how clever it was...
