Building off of a conversation in the latest Letters & Lines (have you listened to it yet?!) what weight/percentage of other mediums do you see comics as a mix of? I like the idea of them being a little closer to theatre than film or TV (and quite far from prose).

Hello! I think due to theatre’s history with tableaux and use of captions as a form they’re the closest medium to comics. You also have the same sense of artifice that the audience willingly immerses themselves in to fully commit to the story.

And I think constructing a page and considering the flow through the page is similar to blocking and considering your stage space. That said comics allow you to control what the reader is seeing or focusing on in ways more comparable to film (close-up etc.)

My hot take (and these probably speak to the bias of our backgrounds) on this: poetry, innit?

Unlike theatre, doesn't have linear time. Has to use space to indicate rhythm of reading and reinject time. Line as single integer is the closest thing to a panel. Can do a bit of visual stuff, albeit to a limited degree and a bit gimmicky.
