Bomb experts like @Brian_Castner reviewed imagery of the scene, and a theory emerged: the secondary blast may have looked big on a drone feed, but it could have been gasoline vapors igniting after the missile thrashed the car's fuel tank.
The driver of the vehicle, as noted by NYT's story as well, worked for a US-based charity that distributed food to displaced people in Kabul, and on that day, the group said he was running work errands in the car. He was being tracked by a drone all day.
DoD said after the strike "no indications at this time" that civilians were killed. But we learned, just before the missile struck, three children came into view on the feed, and gathered near the car as it exploded. They were among 7 other civilians killed, families said.

@thejointstaff @SecDef No more drone strikes. Period. — There are no ‘righteous strikes.’ We are not judge, jury and executioner. Its time we got back to the REAL American way which includes a healthy functioning justice system, and yes, even for suspected terrorists.
So I guess you would rather have Solimani alive? 
Thats why they wouldnt release the names after the strike. They didnt know.
