I understand the reasons behind this change and honestly do respect the effort, but seeing the creator response why not make it an opt-in thing? the same way creators have an option to not display their sub count why not give them an option to abbreviate it so everyone is happy?

No, because that WOULD make sense according to the "reasons" YouTube has outlined in their explanation. The truth is they no longer want Socialblade and other such 3rd party applications to have access to the data, making it harder for us to realise when they plant new creators.
