Religion is one of the only ways that the amoral man can gain access to the moral man. It is true that he uses him in a sense as a substitute for God in his own heart, but not everyone is strong enough to carry God in their own heart.
Religion is one of the only mediating influences that transcends class. It's not really a source of morals so much as it's a source of cohesion that consequently engenders morals to a certain extent. The moral man doesn't need rules, but the amoral man needs the moral man.
