I have sympathy for the, “I want to make sure I have a degree so I have job security” argument. Outdated in some fields, but valid. But anyone making the, “A college degree shows you know how to think critically” argument has not spend enough time around recent college grads.

A degree shows you are good at following directions And possibly that you are good at giving people (professors) what they want (*their* correct answer)
I would think it depends on the degree. And honestly, many real world jobs amount to following directions plus being a professional sycophant anyway
